The Flying Beet will unite three existing student groups–FeelGood, 4local, and Corefoods–to form Columbia University’s first environmentally sustainable café and grocery. The café will serve beverages, soups, salads, hot meals and baked goods prepared by 4local, a sustainable-food enterprise run by Columbia students, and grilled cheese sandwiches made by FeelGood, a social entrepreneurship committed to ending world hunger. CoreFoods, Columbia’s organic grocery, will sell produce, bulk foods, and other grocery items.

We at The Flying Beet see no single way to define or describe ‘sustainability,’ but rather show our support through our practices and the foods we source: The Flying Beet avoids the use of packaging whenever possible, and sources foods that are local, organic, fair-trade, healthy, and consciously grown. The Flying Beet hopes to meet both current and growing demand for sustainable foods, as well as educate the Columbia community on the origins and environmental impact of our food resulting from production, processing, transportation, and finally, consumption.
